Outside Broadcast Management

Stephen Dunn - Technical Producer/Engineering Manager

I started working for Marconi Marine as a sea-going Merchant Navy Radio Officer - then as a shore technician based in Plymouth - where I worked in HM Dockyard Plymouth as well as looking after the electronic equipment on fishing boats and large oil takers from Looe in Cornwall to Start Bay in Devon.

I joined BBC Outside Broadcasts in 1982 as a Communications Engineer, and went through the excellent BBC training programme of the A B C courses. Following this, I managed and co-ordinated the BBC's ancillary radio frequencies which are used by TV, Radio and Local Radio for programme making. I then became an Outside Broadcast Engineering Manager in 1997.

I took a career break in 2007 to work for the United Nations Peace Keeping Department in Sudan - as a Radio Technician. On returning to the UK I resumed my job as an Engineering Manager - this time to be employed by SiS - the company purchased BBC Outside Broadcasts following its sale.

My broadcast career has always been with TV and Radio outside broadcasts - I have worked on, and planned, some complicated and demanding shows - ranging from Snowboarding in Europe, A Gala Classical Music Concert in St.Petersburg, to Royal Weddings and State Funerals.

I have always enjoyed the challenges of Outside Broadcasts and the way a team can be pulled together to deliver amazing and memorable programmes - which I aim to continue doing in my freelance career with Stripey Tie Media.
